Fun with felt fungi

Last Sunday I took part in Wales Fungus Day at the National Botanic Garden of Wales at Llanarthne near Carmarthen.

I always enjoy creating a display using my felt and myriad textiles and this year was no exception. I love how my textiles blend so well with the other inhabitants of the Great Glasshouse......:-)

Here's an article all about it click here

On Sunday 25th June the National Botanic Garden of Wales near Carmarthen is celebrating Wales Wildflower Day (more info here). I will be there making a felt wild flower, amongst other wild flower inspired artists.....

Coming up in July is the Tywi Valley Open Studios Arts Trail. This year 37 artists and craftspeople are opening their studios and homes to the public, free of charge during the last week of July.

This year, I will be sharing the studio space of fellow felter Jane Evans up at Cilycwm near Llandovery. Jane is a gifted feltmaker who has become besotted with the art since she attended a workshop only last year! She is a real inspiration to anyone thinking of taking up felting. (Jane's website)

Nuno Felting & Upcycled Waste-Coat workshop

Waste-coat in progress

I'm really excited to announce a brand new 2-day workshop I will be co-hosting with the award winning Queen of Welsh Up-cycling Carys Hedd:
Nuno Felting & Upcycled Waste-Coat
Saturday & Sunday 4th & 5th March 10-4pm
Melfed,
6 Arcade, Cardigan SA43 1HJ

Day One
Nuno Felting with Sarah Enoch of Calonwlân Felt.

We will be making Nuno felt to be incorporated on day 2 into a fabulous Upcycled Waste-Coat.
Nuno felting is the process of fusing wool fibres with a loose weave fabric to create a totally new and highly textured fabric. During the process, the wool fibres move through the weave of the fabric and attach themselves to each other creating a permanent network of fibres. As the wool fibres shrink in the final part of the process they distort the weave creating an interesting texture.
There will be an additional charge for felting wool and other materials (including vintage sari silk and hand dyed silk chiffon, usually under £10) OR you are welcome to bring your own: this is a fabulous opportunity to up-cycle that old chiffon scarf or that old favourite (but now tatty) cheesecloth blouse you have still got hanging around in the back of your wardrobe. A full list of what to bring will be sent out to you when you book.
Please note: Felting does require moderate physical exertion and at times stamina and perseverance :-)

Day Two
Upcycled waste-coat with Carys-Hedd
We will be using the nuno felted piece in combination with a jumper or two - cutting and using upcycling (machine stitching) techniques to create a delicious new waste-coat, without a pattern, on a mannequin. Bring your own jumpers to upcycle. Loosely woven garments are more difficult to work with, so traditional jumpers are best to use, especially if you’ve never done this before! Bring a variety of colours which will blend well together.

£100 for the weekend including lunch and refreshments plus use of sewing machines and basic felting equipment.

Please book with 50% deposit as space is limited.

Thanks to all the angels .......

Season's greetings to you all.......Wishing you a peaceful and creative end to 2016.

Phew! This has been a busy year of felting!

Thanks to everyone who has been along to a workshop or supported me in other ways by purchasing supplies at shows......or helped me at a show: Sue, Hazel and Jane, you have been angels. Dominique is another angel for lending me her Foot Clinic in Llandeilo for the duration of the Tywi Valley Open Studios Art Trail back in the summer. It literally became the Felt Clinic.......

There are also many angels who appear at the Felt Sanctuaries (sorry I can't name you all, but you know who you are). I really love how we are building up a wonderful felting community here in this part of Carmarthenshire, it really has become a genuine 'Sanctuary' for me and those who attend. There has been incredible creativity generated in this lovely peaceful space at Carmel, it has been such a joy to behold all the amazing felt brought forth into the world here! I am very much looking forward to holding more Sanctuaries in 2017. In fact the next one will be Sat January 14th. more info here

And of course I look forward to offering more workshops more info here

Please enjoy a selection of felt creations (some finished, some in progress) by participants from some of the workshops and Sanctuaries in 2016.
